The disappearance of 84-year-old Nancy Guthrie has put authorities in Arizona on high alert and sparked widespread public attention, especially after a recent family statement released on Thursday, February 5.
Local outlets such as People magazine and CNN reported that the elderly woman was last seen on the evening of Saturday, January 31, around 9:30 p.m., at her home in Pima County. She was reported missing the following day when family members could not reach her.
According to People, based on details from the Pima County Sheriff’s Office, the residence has been designated as a crime scene. Investigators are operating under the theory that she did not leave voluntarily and that it could involve a possible kidnapping.
CNN noted that three potential ransom notes have been sent to media outlets this week. However, the FBI has stated it cannot verify their authenticity, and the family has not received any direct communication from alleged kidnappers.
One of the letters included two deadlines for making large payments via Bitcoin. The first was reportedly set for 5 p.m. on Thursday, February 5, and the second for Monday, February 9.
This development gains added significance because authorities discovered blood on Nancy Guthrie’s porch. Sheriff Chris Nanos described it as “minimal” amounts.
For now, the case is considered especially serious due to the victim’s age and her medical conditions, which require ongoing care, turning the search into an urgent race against time.
Four days after the disappearance, on February 4, the case gained media traction following the release of a video featuring Nancy Guthrie’s children.
In the recording, shared on social media, journalist Savannah Guthrie appeared with her siblings Annie and Cameron to address their mother and anyone who might have details about her whereabouts.
In the video, the journalist stated that “we need to know without a doubt that she is alive and that you have her,” referring to the mentioned letters that reached the family during the week, which discuss a possible kidnapping.
In her message, the anchor warned about how easily images or audio can be altered and stressed the need for certainty before any interaction. “We will not rest—your children will not rest—until we are together again,” Guthrie declared.
The video, accompanied by the phrase “bring her home,” was widely shared by various national and international media.
During the recording, Savannah also highlighted her mother’s fragile health. She explained that Nancy relies on daily medication to stay stable. The family voiced concerns that the absence of these treatments could lead to a fatal outcome if the situation continues.
